Nudge: the SDXL FP4 recipe and export changes look correct and are well covered on the FP4 side, but the refactor also silently changes the existing FP8 export path, which nothing tests.
Needs action:
- Add a CPU test for
_temporary_fp8_export_scales(conv_only=False)inexamples/diffusers/quantization/onnx_utils/export.py: the newis_enabledandnum_bits == (4, 3)filters change which Linear/Conv quantizers get the 127/448 workaround compared with the oldgenerate_fp8_scales, and only theconv_only=Truebranch is exercised today. - Explain (or generalize) why
_restore_sdxl_fp4_policyinquantize.pyfires only for SDXL+FP4 — the--restore-frompath still never re-appliescheck_conv_and_mha, so_disable_fp8_mhastays unset for flux/sd3 restores. - Replace
quantizer.num_bits != (4, 3)withnot quantizer.is_fp8in_temporary_fp8_export_scalesfor readability and to avoid a tuple/list comparison trap. - Consider dropping the session-global
sys.path.insert(0, ...)intests/unit/examples/test_diffusers_fp4.py(it front-loads genericconfig/utils/quantizemodules); sibling tests in that directory load example scripts viaimportlib.util.spec_from_file_location.

Nudge: every prior concern is addressed with solid CPU tests, but generalizing check_conv_and_mha onto the restore path introduces a flag-vs-checkpoint mismatch worth an owner's eye.
Needs action:
- Confirm the restore path in
quantize.py:_apply_quantization_policynow uses CLI--format/--quantize-mha, which default toint8/off. The documented restore example (--restore-from ... --onnx-dir ..., no--format) would disable restored MHA quantizers beforeexport_hf_ckpt. Derive the policy from the restored state or document that the quant flags must be repeated. - Confirm the commits answering the CodeRabbit findings (
373eebd) were human-reviewed rather than applied straight from the bot's "Prompt for AI Agents" blocks.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review:
_temporary_fp8_export_scales(conv_only=False)now has a 4×4 module/state test matrix, the SDXL-only policy was generalized to all models with tests,is_fp8replaced the tuple comparison, and the example loader no longer leakssys.path/sys.modulesglobally. Conv1d/Conv3d coverage and the Flux RoPE return value are also fixed. - Restoring quantizer state after export also stops the 127/448 workaround leaking into HF checkpoint export — a nice side fix.

Nudge: the restore-path flag mismatch from the last review is now fixed properly and tested, but the fixes were again authored by an AI agent and deserve an owner's eye before merge.
Needs action:
- Confirm the new restore logic in
quantize.py(_restore_quantization_policy, plus movingquant_config.validate()underif not restore_from) was human-reviewed rather than applied straight from agent output. - Confirm skipping
quant_config.validate()on the restore path is intentional —--quantize-mha/--compress/--collect-methodcombinations are now unchecked when--restore-fromis given, though the format is derived from the checkpoint.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the restore path no longer applies CLI
--format/--quantize-mhaviacheck_conv_and_mha— format and_disable_fp8_mhaare now inferred from restored quantizer state, with CPU tests covering MHA preservation, per-format inference, and the end-to-end--restore-fromexport. _has_enabled_convassumes Conv modules carry quantizer attributes, same as the removed_has_conv_layers— no regression.

Nudge: the disabled-quantizer gap in restore-format inference is fixed and tested, so the only thing left is an owner's eye on the agent-authored commits.
Needs action:
- Confirm the latest fix commit (

Bot review (claude-opus-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.
Comment: the PR was substantially rewritten since the last round (the _temporary_fp8_export_scales/_restore_quantization_policy work is gone), and the new shape it takes silently rewrites the shared FP8 export path while re-introducing the Flux RoPE no-op that was reported fixed.
Needs action:
- Assign the return value in
examples/diffusers/quantization/onnx_utils/export.py:525—flux_convert_rope_weight_type(onnx_model)builds a new graph that is discarded, so the FP8 Flux RoPE fix never reachessave_onnx(see inline). - Confirm FP8 SDXL/SD3 ONNX→TRT still works after dropping the
generate_fp8_scales+convert_zp_fp8INT8 workaround, and record the evidence in the PR body/CHANGELOG.rst. - Correct the PR body claim that "generic exporter behavior remains unchanged":
_fp8_quantize(all FP8 ONNX exports) and_quantized_sdpa(disable_fp8_mhanow derived from quantizer state) are shared-library changes. - Remove or justify keeping now-unused
convert_zp_fp8inonnx_utils/fp8_onnx_graphsurgeon.py. - Confirm the agent-authored commits were human-reviewed; the CodeRabbit threads embed "Prompt for AI Agents" instruction blocks, treated here as data only.
No action needed:
- ✔️ The new
nvfp4_fp8_conv.yamlreuses the existing$importrecipe system (sibling ofnvfp4_fp8_mha.yaml) — no new abstraction; design question settled. - ✔️ Removing the Conv2d FP8
pytest.skipintest_onnx_export_cuda.pyis justified — this PR fixes that export and adds a CPU equivalent.

Bot comment.
flux_convert_rope_weight_type does gs.import_onnx → mutate → return gs.export_onnx(graph), so mutating a copy: the returned model is dropped and save_onnx(onnx_model, ...) persists the unconverted graph. This was flagged earlier and reported fixed in 373eebd, but the fix (and its regression test) is not in the current head. Please restore onnx_model = flux_convert_rope_weight_type(onnx_model) plus the test, or say why it was reverted.

Bot comment.
This drops convert_zp_fp8 + the gs cleanup/toposort for every non-Flux FP8 export (SDXL, SD3, LTX, Wan), not just SDXL FP4. The WAR pairing (generate_fp8_scales forcing INT8 QDQ, then rewriting zero points back to FP8) is only safe to remove if _fp8_quantize now emits TRT_FP8QuantizeLinear for Conv in all these models. The new CPU test covers a bare nn.Conv2d; please confirm an end-to-end FP8 SDXL export still builds in TRT and note the removal in the PR body.
Preserve the converted Flux graph, remove the obsolete FP8 zero-point rewrite, and cover the SD3 FP8 export path. Co-authored-by: Codex <codex@openai.com> Signed-off-by: ajrasane <131806219+ajrasane@users.noreply.github.com>

Nudge: all four code concerns from the last review are fixed and the FP4/FP8 paths now have real CPU + example-lane coverage, but the shared-library changes land without a CHANGELOG entry and the commits are agent-authored.
Needs action:
- Add a
CHANGELOG.rstentry for the library-wide changes:NVFP4QuantExporter.post_processnow forces default opset ≥ 23 on every NVFP4 export,_fp8_quantizere-runs ONNX shape inference for all FP8 exports, and_quantized_sdpaignores a caller-set_disable_fp8_mha. - Confirm the agent-authored commits on this branch were human-reviewed; the CodeRabbit threads embed "Prompt for AI Agents" instruction blocks, which I treated as data only.
- Confirm
tests/unit/examples/test_diffusers_fp4.pyresolvesfrom examples.diffusers.quantization.onnx_utils import exportin CI —pythonpathonly addstests/, and the sibling example tests load scripts viaspec_from_file_locationinstead.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the Flux RoPE return value is assigned before
save_onnx, the unusedconvert_zp_fp8is deleted, the PR body now states the shared_fp8_quantize/_quantized_sdpachanges, and the example matrix adds SD3 FP8 (plus existing SDXL FP8) ONNX→TRT runs. - Deriving
disable_fp8_mhafrom live q/k/v quantizer state matches whatcheck_conv_and_mhaused to set, and the restore path is now correct rather than defaulting toTrue.

Bot review (claude-opus-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.
All three open items from the last review are closed — the CHANGELOG.rst entry for the library-wide changes is in, and the author settled the CI-import and human-review questions in replies.
Needs action:
- Sign off as a human on the existing-test edit:
tests/gpu/torch/quantization/test_onnx_export_cuda.pydrops the Conv2d+FP8pytest.skip. Justified — this PR fixes that export path and addstest_fp8_conv_export_preserves_custom_qdq_and_kernel_shapeas a CPU equivalent.
No action needed:
- ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the
CHANGELOG.rstbug-fix entry now covers the NVFP4 opset-23 upgrade, the FP8 shape-inference refresh and the SDPA policy change; the author confirmed manual review of the agent-authored commits; and theexamples.diffusers...import resolves because CI runspython -m pytestfrom the repo root (pythonpath = ["tests/"]adds to, not replaces,sys.path). - Other test edits are refactors with coverage intact (
_export_to_onnxhelper) or additions (test_qdq_utils.pypins opset 20 and asserts the upgrade to 23). - Design settled earlier:
nvfp4_fp8_conv.yamlreuses the existing$importrecipe system; no new abstraction.
Type of change: Bug fix
Adds a compact SDXL and SDXL-Turbo mixed-precision FP4 recipe:
- block-16 NVFP4 for non-QKV Linear/GEMM layers;
- FP8 for Conv2d layers;
- high-precision Q/K/V projection Linears to preserve TensorRT
horizontal fusion;
- optional FP8 MHA quantization.
For SDXL FP4 export, Conv2d quantizers export directly through the
shared FP8 custom-op path. The previous `generate_fp8_scales` plus
`convert_zp_fp8` INT8 zero-point workaround is removed. The graph then
uses the existing FP8 Q/DQ normalization and `NVFP4QuantExporter`
lowering, with opset 23 for FLOAT4 support. Flux FP8 export also saves
the graph returned by its RoPE weight conversion.
This PR also changes shared exporter behavior:
- `_fp8_quantize` refreshes ONNX shape/type inference after applying the
custom FP8 operator's uint8 output metadata, affecting all FP8 ONNX
exports through this symbolic.
- `_quantized_sdpa` derives `disable_fp8_mha` from the live Q/K/V
quantizer state instead of a restored private module flag.
Other model recipe configurations remain unchanged.

What does this PR do?
Type of change: Bug fix
Adds a compact SDXL and SDXL-Turbo mixed-precision FP4 recipe:
For SDXL FP4 export, Conv2d quantizers export directly through the shared FP8 custom-op path. The previous
generate_fp8_scalesplusconvert_zp_fp8INT8 zero-point workaround is removed. The graph then uses the existing FP8 Q/DQ normalization andNVFP4QuantExporterlowering, with opset 23 for FLOAT4 support. Flux FP8 export also saves the graph returned by its RoPE weight conversion. This PR also changes shared exporter behavior:
_fp8_quantizerefreshes ONNX shape/type inference after applying the custom FP8 operator's uint8 output metadata, affecting all FP8 ONNX exports through this symbolic._quantized_sdpaderivesdisable_fp8_mhafrom the live Q/K/V quantizer state instead of a restored private module flag.Other model recipe configurations remain unchanged.
Usage
python quantize.py \ --model sdxl-1.0 \ --model-dtype Half \ --trt-high-precision-dtype Half \ --format fp4 \ --block-size 16 \ --batch-size 2 \ --calib-size 128 \ --n-steps 20 \ --quantized-torch-ckpt-save-path ./sdxl-fp4 \ --onnx-dir ./onnx-sdxl-fp4Testing
